This gateway is all that is left of the demolished St Saviour's Church.
St Saviour's Church, in Ditchling Road, was built in 1885/6 and was designed by Edmund Scott (of Scott and Cawthorn), a local architect who also designed St Bartholomew's Church. The tower of this church was never built. A magnificent reredos from Chichester Cathedral was installed in the building in 1909, and was fortunately salvaged when the church was demolished and moved to the disused church of All Saints, Portfield, Chichester which is now a museum of mechanical pianos and organs.
The church closed in 1979 and demolished in 1983. The congregation merged with St Augustine's, Preston to form St Augustine and St Saviour, Preston.

This is the east end from Round Hill Road (c.1982) - the stump of the never completed tower visible to the left. A close inspection will reveal a gateway of similar design to the one still extant today (above the roof of the car).
Finally, here is a drawing of the original design for the church, complete with the never completed tower. This drawing was reproduced in "St Saviour's, Preston, Brighton: a commemoration", 1979, by M J Stacey.
