Church of St Bartholomew, Spithurst, Sussex - 14th December 2003

We came across this building by accident, and the building didn't seem to be in regular use as a church.  A little research on the web revealed it is now a centre for young people to come together in the "glorious countryside of the Sussex Weald" - now called St Bartz.  The building was erected in 1880 to serve as the parish church for Spithurst, a small hamlet close to Barcombe.

The architect for this building was Henry Card of Lewes and it was constructed 1879-1880.  The Early English style was nicely executed in flint with stone dressings and had a western bell cote and an apse at the east end.

This photo (below) was taken from the east, and it seems the diocese has built an extension to enable the change of use.  The building has certainly been erected with a great deal of thought to complement the original style of the church.

Its good to see a redundant church being put to good use!

Here is one final view of the building as it appears from the road.
