It looks as if a building is being erected to the south of the church, so this view will probably be impossible in the future. It was rather a shame about the blue hoarding blocking some of the view. It makes interesting comparison with this view in my Antique Postcard Album.
This old image from 1869 shows St John's Church with a smaller tower with spire which was demolished in subsequent alterations and enlargements.
The next image, together with the description below it, comes from the 1898 Pelton's Guide to Tunbridge Wells.
"St. John's Church, on St. John's Road, was opened in January, 1858. The free-hold ground upon which this church and the vicarage stand, was the liberal gift of the Conservative Land Society, some of the stone being presented by Mrs. Fisher, late of Great Culverden. It is in the Early English style, and is constructed of rag stone, with Bath stone dressings. Mr. Gough, of Lancaster Place, London, was the architect. The original expense of its erection was nearly £3,000, but it has been twice enlarged, and is now under extensive alterations to increase the accommodation. It will then seat over 1,000 worshippers, Sunday services: morning 11; evening, 6.30. Week-day services Wednesdays, 7.30, Fridays, 11.30. Holy Communion after morning service, first Sunday in the month; second, fourth and fifth Sundays at 8 a.m.; third Sunday at close of evening service. Baptisms on the second Sunday in the month at 4 p.m. Service for Children, second Sunday in the month at 3; for Women, third Sunday at 3; for Men, fourth Sunday at 3. Bickersteth's Hymnal Companion (last edition) is used. The Rev. H. E. Eardley, M.A., is the vicar."
